What is a Doula?
Doula comes from the Greek word that means a woman that serves or a woman’s servant. Within the last 10-15 years doulas have become more mainstream. A few celebrities who’ve had a doula to attend their birth has even made it more mainstream and has brought it into the spotlight. The main two types of doulas are birth and postpartum. However, full spectrum doulas are slowing becoming common place. Several organizations offer certifications for both birth and postpartum doulas. Even though certification is not required to become a doula it is often recommended to maintain professionalism and credibility in my opinion.
My certifying organization, DONA International, is one of the oldest and largest certifying organizations worldwide. Here is a link to a video describing the doula’s role.
Ujima Doula Services mission is to provide a full spectrum of support services and support to individuals and families in Northeastern Ohio.
Our vision is that a spectrum of doula services no matter the pregnancy outcome will be available for all those who need it.
